Gated Community – Mick Beck’s Splendid “Big Band” Lantern Theatre Sheffield for Excellent and Unusual Music Gigs

Plus Alan Halsey and Mick Beck, Sound poems

An amazing start to the 2012 Notes and Sounds calendar at the delightful Lantern Theatre

The band explores the boundaries between musical structures and free improvisation.  All members are based in or near Sheffield, some very experienced improvisers, some nearer the beginning of their musical journeys.  This is the first performance since the band appeared at Rotherham’s industrial museum Magna in April 2011.

On this occasion, The audience will also be treated to a performance of the increasingly wellknown Sound Poem Duo of Alan Halsey (poet), and Mick Beck (tenor sax and bassoon), featuring Alan’s own works, and those of Hugo Ball.

Gated Community is a collective improvising group formed by Mick Beck in 2005.  Membership ranges from 10 to 15, and in this performance there will be 14 who will be:

Martin Archer, sopranino and baritone saxes, clarinets  and recorders

Geoff Bright, saxophones and voice

Neil Carver, guitar and effects

Stephen Chase, guitar and other sounds

Charlie Collins, percussion

Sarah Henderson, Cello

Lyn Hodnett, violin, trumpet, voice

John Jasnoch, diverse things to be plucked

Steve Jouanny, electric bass

Herve Perez, soprano sax

Mark Ridler, guitar

Pete White, voice.

Gillian Whiteley, piano

Mick Beck, the motivator, tenor sax, bassoon, whistles.

Noel Taylor clarinetJulie Kjaer  flute. Noura Sanatian violin.

Taylor, Sanatian, Beck, Kjaer at OTT, Sheffield Nov 2011

Noel Taylor has been establishing himself as a new voice on the London scene over the last few years. He presents this new trio of ostensibly classical instruments which will be given an original twist befitting Notes and Sounds alternative takes. Noura Sanatian on violin and Noel Taylor on clarinet are both members of the group Redstart, and the London Improvisers orchestra, joined this time by Danish flautist Julie Kjaer who is leader of the band Cardboard Whale. They will be joined for part of their performance by Mick Beck on bassoon, helping them to lurch from sumptuous harmonies and awful dissonances to dangerously madcap barrages of sound.

Halsey and Beck playing More Than Just Ball

Alan Halsey & Mick Beck will perform their arrangements of sound poems, some by Halsey himself, and some of those Hugo Ball wrote for the Cabaret Voltaire in 1916. In all his work Halsey looks ‘to subvert our expectations

of poetry, to make us look at the moon from the dark side’ (Ian Seed). Beck’s uninhibited versatile tenor sax and his pioneering work with the under-used bassoon (his solo album Life Echoes on the Discus label gives

both instruments a run for their money) add a startling emotional dimension to these ‘verses without words’

KLAUS JANEK (doublebass and electronics
SCOTT R. LOONEY (electronics and prepared piano)
TONY BEVAN (bass saxophone)

Klaus Janek and Scott R. Looney have been working as a duo since 2009. They create a wealth of sonic textural landscapes in their interactions, with an emphasis on logic and contrasting concepts guiding the overall shape of the work. They released their duo album 1510 on Edgetone Records, and subsequently toured the EU playing duo and with other improvisers such as Wilbert DeJoode, Christof Irmer, Martin Blume, Sue Schlotte and many others.

For this 2011 UK tour they will be joined by the always creative and engaging bass saxophone of Tony Bevan, who has been a stalwart figure in the UK improv scene, playing with many notables including a long running trio with Sunny Murray and John Edwards.

Plus

JOHN JASNOCH (12 string guitar)
JOHNNY HUNTER(percussion)
MICK BECK(tenor sax and bassoon)

Jasnoch, Hunter and Beck, based in Sheffield, come together for the first
